Pat finishes the course on molecular gastronomy and then returns the textbook to the school; next fall, the same text is handed to Chris. But with the e-textbook, the school must buy a license, or "copy" for both Pat and Chris. With paper books, the school can buy 100 copies with a huge expense one year, and no expenses at all for the following five or ten.

And, in some places, adopting new textbooks is an arduous process. Easily Portable - published textbooks in physical form can be bulky and heavy. If the student takes several classes in a day, carrying half a dozen textbooks around the campus can become cumbersome.
Although digital and printed textbooks are often compared, i.e. usually by talking about the advantages and disadvantages of each, it is actually a wrong point of view. We shouldn’t be exclusive when it comes to teaching and learning. The solution doesn’t lie in an either-or approach, but in the synthesis of digital and printed teaching materials. For example, if a student acquires new knowledge quickly and is at a higher level than the rest of the class, the teacher may decide to introduce the student to new, more advanced lessons for higher grades. Or digital textbooks allow teachers to clearly identify the subject or area the student struggles with; this way, additional help can be provided, and progress can  be achieved.

According to the College Board, a not-for-profit organization that aims to improve access to higher ed, the average American college student spends approximately US$1,200 a year on books and supplies. More sobering, a total of 5.2 million students have had to use their loans to purchase these materials.
