Scarring is very unlikely with a picosecond laser due to the lack of heat. Heating the tissue around the tattoo ink over and over again with the nanosecond laser is creating trauma. A picosecond laser can shatter the ink pigment into minuscule particles meaning the immune system can be more efficient in carrying away the particles. Macrophages are the pac-man of the immune system that engulf any pathogens like tattoo ink. The pigment needs to be small enough to be carried away through tissue and blood system and excreted in the waste system. Nanosecond laser leave larger ink particles which mean the macrophages have trouble removing the ink from the tattoo sites in the tissue.

The present study reported two cases of PIH caused by trauma and treated by a 755-nm alexandrite picosecond laser in combination with a diffractive lens array or zoom handpiece, with a three-year follow-up. With shorter pulses of the picosecond lasers and photo-acoustic breaking down of the pigment, pico lasers provide targeted and safer pigmentation treatment with less dermal heating than older laser technology. Less skin heating means pico laser treatment for pigmentation is significantly safer in darker skin types.

Collisions of ablated species take place within the plasma plume during the time of flight from the target to the substrate. Such collisions occur at the contact front between the plume and the ambient gas, and near the substrate surface. The aspect ratio of the beam cross section and the size of the beam have a rather peculiar effect on the plume of the ablated material travelling toward the substrate. For one, a smaller spot results in a larger opening angle for the ejected species, and hence such a plasma plume has a large visual appearance.
